Obesity and being overweight is a significant health problem, in addition to the impacts on one’s appearance, obesity poses serious multiple health risks. Being overweight has also been proven to increase surgical risks and complications.

One in four British adults is obese, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. The UK has the highest level of obesity in Western Europe, obesity levels in the UK have more than trebled in the last 30 years and, on current estimates, more than half the population could be obese by 2050.

A person is considered overweight if they have a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 29, and obese with a BMI of 30 and above. In England, 24.8% of adults are obese and 61.7% are either overweight or obese, according to the Health and Social Care Information Centre.


There are hundreds if not thousands of weight loss methods, some are a combination of certain nutrients and restrictions of some others, however no weight loss method will work unless the guidelines are obeyed and strictly followed.

In Dr Zafra’s experience there are few diets and products that can achieve the ideal principal of raising the percentage of proteins to avoid loss of muscle mass and reduce the intake of carbohydrates and fats, which are responsible for weight gain. By minimizing intake of carbohydrates the body switches to ketosis where it breaks down body fat to use, as it’s main source of energy. Ketosis is a normal metabolic process that occurs when you cut back on carbohydrates. Ketosis happens after exercising for a long periods of time and occurs during pregnancy. However people with diabetes, ketosis is very dangerous, as high levels ketones lead to dehydration and changes in the chemical blood balance.

The weight loss method selected does not include medications of any type and it consists in a diet with high quality protein products indicated in phases according to each individual’s desired weight loss.

The diet requires medical monitoring and products are sold only under doctor’s orders to achieve safely the optimum results. Consultations are scheduled depending on the phase selected to begin with, can be up to three consultations per month, to once a month.

Ideally in optimum conditions you can lose up to one stone (7kg) per month.

What is the daily cost of the diet?

Depends on the number of products per phase, a full meal replacement costs an average of £30 per day.

Are there side effects?

During the first couple of days, before the body enters ketosis, hunger and low energy levels can occur, but this is temporary. Micronutrient supplementation is part of the diet to prevent any potential deficiencies related to diet and weight loss.

Is weight regained after the diet?

Muscle mass and basal metabolic rate are maintained as long as nutritional re-education continues. In the different phases you gradually reintroduce normal food into your diet, you will gain an in depth understanding of how to eat to optimize your health and maintain your weight long term.

Is adherence to diet difficult?

Is the Atkins diet the same as Proteifine®?

The Proteifine® is a protein based diet but not a high protein diet, essential fats with minimal amounts of carbohydrates are in the products. This promotes effective, safe and healthy weight loss through mild ketosis. The Atkins Diet consists of eating large amounts of animal protein and the intake of both fat and protein is unlimited, which can result in health problems.
